4Good bass for your buck
By Shaun T. Moran
I blew out my non-internally amplified 6.5inch bazooka tube sub for behind my seat in my pickup by accidently sitting on the volume up button on remote. This was a quick and easy replacement and actually gives more bass than the original. I am amplifying it with an older alpine 60x4 vdrive cd/mp3 deck and a 100rms x 1 output (bridged) definately nothing special by any means but i can tweak it endlessly which i like, and it is plenty sufficient as it was with the bazooka. The bazooka took less power at lower volumes so i had it turned down more, but this can hit harder at higher volumes. The quality of the bass (response) is also different (slightly differnt low response, responds easily to 70-100hz but 65 and below takes a drop off and it is less responsive, hence i had to re-eq my deck and amp but in the end i got nice crisp univerally tight but not boomy bass response from this small speaker.

2Won't win anything at DB Drags, but they shake my mirrors
By T-rav
I have two MAXP64's in the 6.5" stock door locations of my 04 Silverado. These are powered by a Boss double-din dvd/bluetooth head unit. Originally I planned to power them with an amplifier, however once I hooked them up to the head unit I was immediately impressed and threw that idea out the window.

NOTE that I have Pioneer 4x6 co-axials in the rear pillars powered by the head unit and hooked up to 300Hz Stinger bass blockers, which means I can turn my head unit's bass setting all the way up to +7, Loudness turned on, and Dynamic Bass turned on without the 4x6s distorting. The result is great punchy bass & mid-bass from the doors, and crystal clear mids & highs from the pillars. Could I go even louder with an amplifier on the subwoofers? Yes. But I already have more than enough good clear clean loud sound in my stereo system for what I want to do. My basic setting is Bass -1, Dynamic Bass on, and I toggle Loudness on and off depending on how I want to listen to whats on the radio.

These sound great, just don't expect to be overly impressed by them, more like pleasantly surprised. Overall the two of these have plenty of bass and sound great, but don't expect one sub alone to give you enough thump to be satisfied. Buy two and for under $50 you'll be pleasantly surprised too.

Note that while my door locations are technically a free-air mount, there is a sizable chamber behind the speaker panel that definitely helps the resonating bass frequencies similar to a sealed or ported subwoofer box. Putting two of these in a rear trunk panel of a car in a true infinite baffle or free-air mount will cancel out some of the bass, much more so than mounting them in a door or small speaker box. Take this into consideration before mounting them truly free-air with a large open space behind them. Also note, they are sold individually, if you want two speakers, order a quantity of 2.

UPDATE: A little over a year later, and one has a bad voice coil causing a lot of distortion, and the other just stopped working. It didn't blow, or distort, or do anything to suspect it would quit working... it just died. Checked connections and found nothing wrong with the signal to the speaker, it doesn't work on any channel, other speakers work fine. So, out of 2 speakers with mild usage, 6,000 to 7,000 miles in 16 months, and with low bass settings and on mid to low volume, both speakers need replaced. Dropping the rating from 5 stars to 2 stars. Even after very mild use, these speakers have a very short life expectancy.

4Glad to be thumping again
By R. Palmieri
I was quoted $100 locally for a far cheesier version of this made in china speaker. As it was intended to replace a blown subwoofer in a $125 Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system, I was loathe to spend $100, even to avoid shipping. This was a pretty good fit in the end, though I had to salvage part of the grill frame from the old speaker. Going strong, thumping along without getting too audiophile serious.
